12 Summer Cocktails You’ll Want to Have at Your Next Backyard BBQ

Beers are fine for everyday affairs, but if you want your backyard BBQ to stand out you need to up your game. Cocktails are the way to go for a colorful splash of summer refreshment.
Unless you want to shake things up with the most glamorous drink in the world, the Diamonds are Forever Martini, this list of delish summer cocktails will do the trick.
1. Party Starter
Kick your event into gear with this aptly named concoction. It’s guaranteed to get everyone in high spirits from the word go.
Here’s how to make it happen:
Pour 1 1/2 oz. tequila, 3/4 oz. of lemon, 3/4 oz. of honey diluted 2:1 with water and 2 dashes of lavender bitters into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until chilled and then strain the mix into a tall glass.
To serve, top with tonic, 2 more dashes of lavender bitters, and curl of grapefruit peel.
This is one of the classic summer cocktails that deserves a place at any warm-weather social occasion. Hire a bartender for this one, as your guests are sure to be coming back for more.
The recipe goes like this:
Combine the following in a shaker with ice.
- 1 oz. lime
- 1 1/2 oz. tequila
- 1/2 oz. Amaro Montenegro
- 3/4 oz. honey syrup (2:1 honey to water)
- 1/4 oz. blue Curacao
- 1/4 oz. mezcal
Shake it up, strain into a double rocks glass, and garnish with a flourish of lime. It’s poolside perfection.

Try this version to bring that island vibe into your own backyard:
Place some fresh spearmint leaves in the bottom of a highball glass and get to work on them with a muddler. Pour in 1.5 oz. rum, .75 oz. lime juice, .75 oz. simple syrup, and 1 oz. pear puree.
Add ice and transfer the mixture to a shaker. Shake it all up before transferring the lot back into the glass and topping up with club soda. A sprig of mint and a thin slice of pear complete the picture.
5. The East Side of Some Island
Continuing the island theme, this original compilation is a low-alcohol take on gin-iced tea. It all starts with brewing the tea and allowing it to cool. Then proceed as follows:
Combine 1 3/4 oz. hibiscus tea, 1 oz. fresh-squeezed lime juice, 2 oz. gin and 1 oz. simple syrup in a shaker with loads of ice. Add a fistful of mint, 8 slices of cucumber and shake hard.
Strain the drink into a chilled Collins glass with more ice and a pinch of salt. Add grated lime zest and a cucumber slice for garnish.
6. Beachside Rum Punch
If you don’t want to spend your day making summer alcoholic drinks, a bowl of this fragrant punch will set you free.
For a big, boozy, bowl of deliciousness, mix the following together:
- 2 cups rum
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1 cup pineapple juice
- 3/4 cup lime
- 3/4 cup cinnamon syrup
- 1/2 cup Curacao
- 16 dashes Angostura bitters
Garnish as you please, remember to place a ladle in a strategic position, sit back and enjoy.
7. Sour-Cherry Gin Smash
This attractive crimson drink is the perfect partner for a summer soiree.
To make it, muddle 6 sour cherries together with a cube of sugar in a cocktail shaker. Pour in 2 oz. gin and .5 oz. fresh lime juice and shake. Strain into a Collins glass and top with ginger ale and a lime wedge.
8. Mexican Mule
No list of drinks is complete without some summer cocktails with vodka. Try this central American take on the Moscow classic.
Combine 2 oz. vodka, .5 oz. lime juice, .75 oz. pineapple juice and .5 oz. ginger syrup in a cocktail shaker and stir them together. Strain the drink into a rocks glass, add a splash of spiced rum and you’re good to go.
9. Sicilian Firing Squad
This dramatic looking blood-red concoction is the perfect match for a Mafia-themed party and it’s easy to make. Simply combine the following ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake:
- 1 oz. Solerno Blood Orange liqueur
- 1 oz. Montelobos mezcal
- .5 oz. grenadine
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 oz. fresh lime juice
A lime wheel and Luxardo cherry garnish add to the garish effect.

Shake 1/2 oz. dry gin, 1/2 oz. yellow Chartreuse, 1/2 oz. Batavia arrack, 1/2 oz. lemon juice and 1/4 oz. simple syrup together in a cocktail shaker and shake it all about.
Strain the lot into a cocktail glass filled with ice and top with tonic water, a sprig of mint and float of 1/4 oz. Fernet-Branca.
12. Alcohol-Free Summer Cocktails
Refreshing drinks for the drivers among your party are a nice touch. Spoil them with these concoctions:
- Peach Bellini – peach nectar and mixed berries topped up with ginger ale
- Paloma fizz – pink grapefruit juice, rosemary syrup, and seltzer water
- Blueberry mule – fresh blueberries, lime juice, sugar, and ginger beer.
